Weighing In on Consumer Agency’s Action on Upfront Card Fees

By Jasmine Pinschof  May, 03, 2012

Updated: Friday, 6:40 p.m. to add bureau comment.

I wrote a story for Thursdays paper about a Consumer Financial Protection Bureau proposal that would actually make it easier for credit card issuers to charge hefty upfront fees.

To quickly recap: A relatively new law said that credit card issuers had to limit the fees they could charge to borrowers in the year after the account was opened. So after some card issuers started charging application or processing fees before consumers’ accounts were opened, regulators added a rule applying the fee limit to those upfront charges, too. T

Credit Card Rewards Are Better than Ever

By Jasmine Pinschof  Mar, 25, 2012

Weve been covering the rapidly improving quality of credit card reward offers in the U.S. in a series of articles on our blog for the past year. And its been quite a story. Card issuers began ramping up their rewards programs somewhere in late 2010, even as their charge-off and delinquency rates were still at near record-high levels. Then the issuers gradually whipped themselves into a rewards frenzy, frantically trying to outdo the competitions latest incredibly attractive offer. The result is that Americans with very good credit scores are now getting the best credit card offers ever.

Ruth Simon has done a lot of work to bring us up to speed on the current state of affairs in an excellent piece for the WSJ and she finds that credit card rewards programs just keep getting better.

A New Credit Card Lets Customers Make The Rules

By Jasmine Pinschof  Mar, 02, 2012

The product development team at Barclaycard is well aware that banks don’t rank very high in the realm of public opinion. So they’ve created a new kind of credit card that tries to put you, the cardholder, in the driver’s seat.

Its calling the new card   the Barclaycard Ring MasterCard the first social credit card, one that will be shaped by its cardholders feedback. And this isn’t simply about personalizing your plastic with pictures of puppies and kittens or picking a convenient payment date. Barclaycard is taking matters a step further: it’s pulling back the curtain on its profit and loss statements — and it says it’s going to let consumers collect a share of the profits.

You might be thinking, as I was, ‘I barely have time to pay my credit card bills. Now you want me

Reader Question – Does canceling a secured credit card effect crdit score?

By Oliver Dalrymple  Nov, 29, 2011

Its QA time again. This one comes from Avacodo who is asking

If you start out with a secured credit card to build credit and you get your credit build up, and you are approved for a unsecured credit card. is it better for your credit score to cancel the secured card or should you keep it because its your oldest card?

Answer: 1. Ask if current CC company if they are willing to unsecure it (if you already have an acceptance offer for another CC, it may even be worth to mention that to them)2. If yes great. Also ask for a credit limit increase.3. If no keep it. Let it sit with a very small monthly balance. Use it to buy gas and food, small stuff. Accept the new unsecured credit card, establish it with 2 years of clean repayment history.4.

By Jasmine Pinschof  Sep, 27, 2011

Its one of those things that makes you wonder why it wasnt available before. Fifth Third Bank has just introduced Duo, a piece of plastic that works as both a debit card and a credit card.

Fifth Third, based in Cincinnati, says that while various institutions have been testing the cards, it is the first to formally offer it to consumers. Research with its own customers suggested that there was a significant demand for the two-in-one cards, said Stephanie Honan, a spokeswoman for Fifth Third. Many customers use both type of cards debit for smaller purchases, say, and credit for larger purchases they want to pay off over time. So, she said, customers like the idea of being able to choose credit or debit while carrying just one card.

Heres how it works: First, you have to have a checking account at Fifth Third, since debit cards are linked to checking accounts.
