Work Wardrobe 101

By Oliver Dalrymple  Jul, 20, 2011

First job? New job? Old job where you aren’t moving up as fast as you like? It could be time to take a look at your clothes. Dressing the part can help you fit in and get ahead in almost any office.  You don’t have to drop hundreds of bucks today to start getting your wardrobe in order. Here are a few things I’ve learned about work clothes since grad school: 1. Dress as the natives do. Watch what people wear around your office and dress accordingly. If your office is “business casual,” stick with slightly nicer clothes than the norm. Supervisors notice your appearance. And if they’re looking for someone to meet a client, they want to know you can rise to the occasion.

2. Go for staples. Black or gray pants, a black skirt or dress, and a few nice sweaters or jackets in neutral colors go a long way. Leave the patterns and colors for shirts or accessories to give your work wardrobe lots of versatility.

3. Good shoes and a nice bag help. Often, the price you pay for a nicer pair of shoes is worth it in terms of how long they’ll last. 4. Suit up for success. In most fields it pays to have a nice business suit. Stick with classic colors and a traditional cut so it will last you for years.

5. Just say no to flip flops, sweats, cutoffs and spaghetti straps. Even if people say it’s okay to dress this casually, you are better off staying on the professional side of casual.

6. Shop deals. Keep your eye out for sales and shop off-season to get great prices on workplace threads.
